One of the questions I get asked the most is how I got started with woodworking, and my answer is always the same: When I started decorating and furnishing my home, I either couldn't find exactly what I wanted or I couldn't afford what I wanted. In fact, I have avoided large furniture stores for both reasons for years. Everything looks so cookie cutter when it comes from a large furniture store, and I wanted more unique pieces for my home. Bassett Furniture completely changed my mind!

I was skeptical when Bassett approached me to help launch the opening of their new Baybrook store because our house presents unique issues when it comes to choosing furniture. Since we have moved into our home, I have wanted a huge sectional for our especially large living room. Sectionals from most furniture stores were much too small so I assumed Bassett would be the same. I could not have been more wrong. If I had to summarize Bassett in one word, it would be "customized." I have always known that Bassett had high quality furniture, but I had no idea everything was so customizable.

It is unbelievable how much you can customize with Bassett Furniture to get EXACTLY what you want. Everything on the showroom is beautiful (I wanted to redo my whole house after my store visit), but you can customize just about everything you see to fit your needs. They have a variety of styles, but I would say they lean more toward a transitional design.

I was especially impressed with their thoughtful layout of the design process. For instance, the area above is where you can design your own dining table and chairs with Bassett. The base of the table shows all the possible bases from which to choose, and the top shows the myriad choices of wood tops with 2 different edge choices. Even the chairs on the wall can be customized.

Bassett does a great job of having variety in the showroom so that you can see your options but still get items customized to suit you. I know my husband is terrible at visualizing how a room could look so it's nice to have physical items for him to see, not to mention getting to try something out for comfort (I tried out every. single. sofa in the entire store, and I swear they were all crazy comfortable).

If you're not quite ready to work with a design consultant yet (I'll get to that experience in just a sec), this touch screen is a great option for getting started. You can design your own furniture on the screen, and it shows you the price as you create it with your chosen options.

Bassett has approximately 4 million choices when it comes to fabrics, leathers, and rugs. This wall shows just their leather choices. I told you that you'd be able to find something that works for you. They also have much larger samples so that you can really see what something looks like on a bigger scale.

If you're like me, I get completely overwhelmed by all my choices, and I struggle choosing a cohesive color palette. That's where your design consultant comes in (a completely free service, by the way). Bassett's experts will help you every step of the way, and I was so grateful for my design consultant Ruth. She knew everything about the furniture and helped me see the flaw in my original design plan. When it was time to choose the sectional fabric, rug, throw pillows, etc., I would have been lost without her. You can choose from hundreds of fabrics just to create your throw pillows. Ruth helped me to choose fabrics, colors, and textures to create a seamless look.

One of my absolute favorite features of Bassett is something I used before I even went to the store: the room planner. On Bassett's website, they have a feature through their HGTV collaboration that allows you to plan your room on the computer with exact dimensions. I mentioned earlier that our house has unique issues, such as weird angles, that can make planning tricky. I'll imagine something in my head, but it doesn't translate well to the actual space. With the room planner, I was able to insert the dimensions of the room and even insert where we have windows, the fireplace, and the tv. Then, I can just drag and drop the Bassett furniture I'm interested in to see how it looks in the space. That is HUGE for me! It's so important to see how furniture will fit into your space before you go to the store and fall in love with something that isn't going to work.

Before going into the store, I had my eye on this Sutton sectional in a huge U shape. My design consultant Ruth helped me to see that the U shape was a too closed off so we modified it to include a chaise lounge on the side opening to the kitchen, and she helped choose an additional chair to complete the space. I really cannot say enough good things about this experience, and I am absolutely giddy to get this furniture and see it in my home! If you've been having trouble finding what you want, give Bassett Furniture a shot and let them show how you can customize anything to create your dream home.
