While out thrifting last week, I came across this beautiful side table. Of course, I had no need for a side table, but I just couldn't stop thinking about all those yummy curves. As I walked around the store, I just kept coming back to look at her. For $30, I just couldn't pass her up so she came home with me.

The table had damaged parts on the top but was otherwise in great shape. I planned to paint it white and distress it a bit. I'm a firm believer in sanding before painting (even if I use chalk paint) so I started sanding the top with a fine grit, just to even out the surface. After a few seconds, I could see the raw wood underneath so I changed out the sandpaper with a rougher grit to remove the stain. Lo and behold, gorgeous blonde raw wood. Her fate was sealed: she would be sanded all over to reveal the natural beauty. No paint for her.

I will admit that it took me about 4 hours of sanding, but it was totally worth it. Plus, I was able to use electric sanders on about 95% of the table. I only had to sand by hand on the nooks and crannies. I love the almost reverse distressing: mostly blonde raw wood with the original dark stain highlighting the intricate details.

To seal the table, I just did one coat of Varathane's Triple Thick Polyurethane. I love that finish for furniture because it goes on so thickly that you only need one coat and it's water-based (I'll do anything to avoid oil-based products because I hate the cleanup).

This lovely table found a home in our master bedroom sitting area, and it fits right in with the soft neutral colors. Plus, I like that I have more space for drinks and books versus the smaller table I had here before. I just love when a cheap thrift store find works out like that.
