Spooky Halloween Dining Room

I have never been a big fan of dressing up or decorating for Halloween. However, now that I have kids, they really love Halloween. Understandably so, since they get a bunch of free candy. I decided to start small this year and just decorate the dining room (designed by Erin Kern from Cotton Stem Interiors) using only items I already had on hand or inexpensive decor from the dollar store. I was inspired by old school apothecary shops with a spooky twist. I absolutely love how it turned out. It's so much fun decorating for Halloween.

It's always interesting to decorate this table because it's a whopping 12 feet long. Centerpieces can be tricky and expensive but not this one. I used black cheese cloth as a runner. A cake stand holds a skull, crow, and purple roses (all from the dollar store) in the center of the table. I added skulls, battery-operated flameless candles, and vases with black and purple roses (again, all from the dollar store).

The place settings start with my shiplap chargers that you can buy from my shop here. Then, I layered a scalloped white dinner plate (found here) with a purple napkin (found here), and a scalloped white salad plate (found here). The adorable topper is a mini cauldron (4 for $1 at the dollar store) that I stuffed with leftover pillow stuffing to look like smoke.

The sideboard features some of my favorite cheap and easy DIY projects to date. I made the apothecary sign, but you can get a free 8x10 download here. I added some bats (found here) for extra dimension. I added some apothecary bottles that were made from empty bottles we already had. I used this tutorial to create the aged mercury glass look. The labels are a free printable I found here. I added a plastic cauldron, skeleton, skull cup with black roses, an apothecary jar of eyeballs, and a plastic rat. Again, all items were from the dollar store.

My 2 favorite projects from this Halloween makeover are the books. For the stack of books, I followed this tutorial. I already had the books and paint. I just spent $1 on a bag of creepy creatures that include a skeleton and bat to create the 3D look on the top book. The metallic paint was dabbed on with my finger to give it that great texture. The open potions book was made with a free printable found here. I just glued the pages into a book I already had. I added a skull and my mortar and pestle from the kitchen.

Thank you so much for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed my Halloween dining room and that you try out some of the DIY projects. I'd love to hear from you if you try anything out.
