When I found out we were pregnant with our second child, I so badly wanted it to be a boy. We had a girl, and now I was ready for a little boy. My husband is a huge comic book fan so I knew I would do a superhero/comic theme for the nursery. As soon as the sonogram tech told us it was a boy, I immediately started planning. I don't like to spend a lot of money on kid furniture because...duh! The crib and dresser are both from IKEA (Gulliver and Hemnes, respectively).

I ordered a personalized superhero pillow cover from Etsy and found a stuffed superdog on Amazon. The large Captain America was a gift from my brother-in-law (he got Lucy a giant Darth Vader that she loves). I found the POW laundry hamper at Home Goods. A friend gifted us comic book print receiving blankets.

I knew I wanted Ricky's name above the crib so I had a sheet of MDF cut to size at Home Depot and then spray painted it glossy red. I bought unfinished letters at Hobby Lobby. Then came the fun part. I picked out some of my husband's comics and flipped through trying to find especially awesome pictures. I made a copy of the page I wanted onto cardstock. I traced the letter onto the page, cut it out, and used Mod Podge to glue the paper to the letter. Lastly, I used wood glue to adhere the letters to the board.

The canvases above the dresser are from Target, as is the Batman piggy bank. The personalized burp cloth is a gift from a friend. The changing pad has a navy cover with stars. I knew I wanted a red lamp but couldn't find the shape I wanted in the right color. I loved this lamp, but it was a different color so I just spray painted it red with the leftover spray paint from the project above the crib.

The lamp shade is one of my favorite projects from this room. I bought a plain white lamp shade. I googled an image of a basic skyline and printed it out on regular paper. I taped it to the inside of the lamp shade and turned the light on so the lines would be easier to see. Then I just used a Sharpie to trace the outline of the buildings. I went back to add windows. I moved the paper all around the lamp shade until I had a skyline wrapping the entire thing,

For the window area, I painted the surround navy and hung navy curtains. I made a seat cushion out of plywood cut to size at Home Depot. I cut the foam to size with an electric knife and then just stapled the comic book fabric to the underside. The red pillows are from Target, and the POW and BAM pillow covers came from Etsy.

The curtain tie-backs and the lamp shade are probably what get the most comments in this room. I saw this idea on Pinterest and fell in love. I just bought a sheet of ref felt, traced a mask on it, and cut it out. I bought a sheet of yellow felt, traced a star on it, and cut it out. I glued the star to the mask and then attached ribbon. This is my favorite detail in the room.

I ordered the comic book Boppy cover on Etsy. I saw an idea on Pinterest for a speech bubble bookshelf. At the time, I wasn't confident enough in my woodworking skills to tackle the angles required for this project so I asked the dad of a friend of ours to make it for me. He is much more talented than I am, and I love the way it came out. I used the same red spray paint that I used on the lamp and crib art.

I created this graphic art using my Silhouette Studio software. It was so easy to make, and I love the personal touch it adds to the room. Ricky is definitely my favorite superhero. I hope you enjoyed the tour of Ricky's superhero nursery. I would love to hear what you think and what ideas you have for a superhero/comic room.
