House Tour: Master Bedroom

I wanted to share one of my favorite spaces in our home - the master bedroom. I wanted this space to feel cozy and peaceful for obvious reasons. With 2 small kids running around, it's nice to have a serene place to escape to at the end of the day. I read an article once about how this woman made her master bedroom a haven for she and her husband. It was the one place in the house where they didn't have pictures of their kids, and they limited how much the kids came into the room. Something about that stuck with me, and I've tried to adhere to those ideas as much as possible. Our kids are super cute so we have their pictures all over the house but not in our room. I also try to limit how much we play in our bedroom. I've used all neutrals to keep the space soothing.
I made the shiplap headboard, which was inspired by Erin (check her out on Instagram @cottonstem). She also inspired the book wall. I love shiplap, but it can look a little too farmhousey so I "fancified" it with a more ornate shape. I'm hoping to have a blog post up soon about how to make the headboard because it was super easy.

My hubby loves to write poetry, and I love to read so we have tributes to these passions all over the room. The pages and books above the bed are all love poems and love stories. The pages were applied with double-sided mounting tape, and the books are held up with small tack nails. The sign is a quote from Walt Whitman made by my friend Stacie (check her out on Instagram @theranchette).

I love to read so I have cozy reading nooks all over our house, and this one is my favorite. This sitting area is just perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee (on the rare occasion the kids allow me to do that). I live in Houston so you can imagine how crucial the antique mantel and vintage heater are during the summer, but I love them too much. I cannot wait to decorate that area for Christmas. See that deerskin? It covers up a huge stain from when Rick spilled a margarita on that chair. I lucked out that it looks perfect there.

I also have two of the poems my hubby wrote for me framed in our room. These are some of my most treasured possessions. My husband is super manly so I love the surprise that he likes to write poetry. These frames are next to my blanket ladder from Harp Design Co in Waco. My Choose Joy mini sign hangs from this ladder, and it's one of the first things I see every morning. It's the perfect reminder.

I have some love stories and my leather-bound Bible journal in this rustic birdcage. I borrowed this idea from the one and only Cindy (check her out on Instagram @acottagegirl). This is my favorite picture of my husband and I. It's from our engagement photos, and our photographer didn't even edit this one because it's an in-between shot she happened to capture. I love how we're both laughing. It's always the real-life photos that are best.

Our favorite short story is "The Diary of Adam and Eve" by Mark Twain. If you've never read it, it's an absolute must - funny and poignant. This sign is at the entrance to our bedroom, and it's the last line in the story. I sell this sign and the short story in my shop. The corbels are from Hobby Lobby.

When Rick and I were dating, we took a magical trip to Paris so I incorporated some of these reminders onto our dresser: an Eiffel Tower statue and a French script box filled with flowers. Our marriage scripture is Ruth 1:6 so I had Rachel (check her out on Instagram @thewoodedlane) make these canvas prints that hang on some old window shutters I found in my parents' garage.

I made this sign as an anniversary present a few years ago. My husband said this to me when we were still dating, and it's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. The frames with the metal word cutouts were inspired by a display I saw at Magnolia Market. I bought the frames and words at Hobby Lobby, spray painted the frames white, and spray painted the words black. I used long tack nails to hang the words on the outside of the frames so it gives it a great three-dimensional look. The bench at the foot of the bed was found in our neighbor's trash (Rick loved carrying that home). I refinished it and now I have a place to store pillows, and Rick can set on the bench to put on his shoes instead of messing up the bed I painstakingly make every morning,

This room is exactly what I want it to be: a peaceful retreat with personal reminders of our love. I'd love to hear what you think so leave me a message in the comments below.
